Amid the nationwide reckoning over race and policing, HuffPost set out to make a guide to the alternatives to calling 911 whenever you're concerned about something. We examined 16 scenarios, from acts of vandalism to identity theft to mental health.
Some may seem minor. But calling the police can have very serious consequences, especially for Black Americans. George Floyd, Eric Garner, Michael Brown and Tamir Rice — police killed each of them after someone dialed 911 to report a trivial, routine, nonviolent concern.
In my own community, I often hear people suggesting that others call the police over minor things, without thinking through the potential impacts of doing so, especially for our Black and brown neighbors. That's why we crafted the series to answer the kinds of questions average people might have about their own engagement with and reliance on police.
Here are some examples:
There is of course a national conversation underway right now about defunding or completely abolishing the police. Even if readers aren't ready to go there, we hope the series can show the ways we rely too heavily on police to address every problem in society rather than investing in things like mental health care, housing and safer schools.
And because HuffPost believes in systemic change, we’ve included ideas about how you might invest your energy if you want to create better programs in your community, as well as resources and organizations that can help. |
