No Images? Click here Reuters/Eric Gaillard Sean Penn The Novelist Must Be StoppedActor Sean Penn's debut novel, Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff, is out today. And it is apparently next-level bad. My colleague Claire Fallon read it so we don't have to. She wrote a scathing and insightful takedown. Not only is the novel poorly written, hard to follow, and jam-packed with fifty cent words that Penn doesn't seem to understand, Fallon writes: It "repeatedly makes comedic hay out of violence against women, while holding them up as objects of ridicule." Of course, Penn's book shouldn't matter at all. Yet it was blurbed by some very reputable people -- including the author Salmon Rushdie. And this is why the whole awful thing matters. It fits a larger pattern: White men who write books or produce films and TV series are taken far more seriously as artists than women. Fallon turned me on to this fantastic piece called "The Male Glance," which argues that we refuse to read genius, or even artistic intentionality, into works by women. The essay is well worth your time. But if you need an end-of-the-day pick me up, just read Claire's piece. Trust me. P.S. Did you know you could follow me on Twitter? @EmilyRPeckP.P.S.
