Find out how to support our journalism.
| | | | Good morning and thanks for reading the Morning Email. We wanted to take some time to reflect on the year and thank you for being a subscriber to this newsletter.
We’ve had quite the year for news — from Greta Thunberg taking on climate change to President Donald Trump getting impeached. In between covering the year's top stories, including the presidential race, Hurricane Dorian and the government shutdown, our reporters and editors have been hard at work getting additional scoops and doing stand-out enterprise journalism. Below are a few of our favorite HuffPost stories from 2019 as selected by our editors. If you’re passionate about supporting more journalism like this, we hope you’ll consider becoming a HuffPost Plus member.
Happy holidays, and here’s to a wonderful 2020. We can't wait to see what next year brings.
Lauren Moraski Senior Editor, Strategic Projects | | | | | | | | | | | | Go Back To Your Country, They Said
A couple years back we noticed a pattern in the Documenting Hate database, which is a collection of tips and news articles maintained by ProPublica. So many of the hate incidents involved the perpetrator saying some variation of “go back to your country.” We started our own database of those incidents with the idea that collecting and analyzing them might say something about what white nationalist hate looks like in the Trump era. We ended up collecting 800 incidents. About half of those were verified via other news articles or by our media partners in the Documenting Hate project. For the rest of the incidents, we did the best we could to verify as many as possible. That involved sending hundreds of emails and making hundreds of phone calls. In the end, it helped document a type of street-level hate and violence unique to this era. It helped demonstrate how hateful rhetoric from a president softens up marginalized groups as targets for both state violence.
Here’s What It’s Like To See Yourself In A Deepfake Porn Video This is a fantastic, easy-to-read explainer on a complicated and disturbing new phenomenon. Reporter Jesselyn Cook hit several different notes, from deepfake porn to political deepfakes, and also the graphics and presentation are amazing — including a deepfake of of the Jesselyn herself. NBC News released a very similar explainer the same day and ours was just clearly much better. | | | | | | | | You Should See Someone, A Guide To Doing Therapy
Mental health is an important pillar of our coverage on Life and we knew we wanted to pursue more well-designed, bigger service packages this year. We had been talking about Yelping therapists and realized that, while therapy has become more normalized in recent years, there's still a long way to go and there aren't really useful instructions on how to start it and do it.
Most people have no idea where to begin, especially since there are so many different types of therapy. Many people also don't know what they can expect from their sessions, or don't know how to talk about it. We already had a ton of stories on therapy and we knew we could do more. We looked at this package as a way to reuse our evergreen content, assign out newer pieces, and — most importantly — help people feel comfortable with the idea of therapy. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 👋 You may have noticed that our website is now www.huffpost.com.
