| | | | | | | Ruckus, ruckus, ruckus.
As Union Minister Amit Shah introduced the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Parliament, Opposition parties were immediately up in arms and asked the government to withdraw the bill.
Parties, including Congress and BSP, had said they will oppose the bill “tooth and nail” because it is against the Constitution and its secular ethos.
According to the proposed legislation, members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities, who have come from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, and facing religious persecution there will not be treated as illegal immigrants but given Indian citizenship. Introducing the bill, Shah said, “This bill is not even .001% against minorities in the country.”
The Lok Sabha voted in favour of the introduction. |
