On March 13, Scott — a writer in Austin, Texas — and his on-and-off girlfriend of five years broke up. A day later, he self-isolated. “I can honestly say this is the most isolated I’ve ever felt,” he said. “I joked to a friend that there are two things I need to help me recover from this breakup: a hug and a bartender. Unfortunately I don’t have access to either.”

Scott isn’t alone — well, in his experience, anyway. Many people are grappling with the aftermath of a breakup or divorce in quarantine. Some, like Scott, are solo with no physical support system. Others are stuck in the same house with their ex with nowhere to go. Neither situation is ideal. Senior reporter Brittany Wong turned to experts and the newly brokenhearted for some tips they’re learning in lockdown.

In case you missed it:

If you’re looking for a smile today, this story is it: San Diego respiratory therapist Robertino Rodriguez realized how scary a hospital stay can be for COVID-19 patients. You’re battling a dangerous virus without visitors there to comfort you, and the only people you do see are medical staff suited up in protective gear that covers most of their faces. “A reassuring smile makes a big difference to a scared patient,” he recently posted on Instagram. “So today I made a giant laminated badge for my PPE so my patients can see a reassuring and comforting smile.”

couple telling secret

We planned to write a story on the weird things couples do when they’re alone long before the coronavirus pandemic, but with more pairs home together than ever before, it feels especially appropriate. You’re not the only one who pops your partner’s back pimples and goes into graphic detail about bowel movements.

Some of these are grosser than others
