It's one of the thorniest questions of the Trump era, made even thornier if you're an employee of the federal government. Do you quit in protest? Can you be effective on the outside? Will your colleagues feel abandoned?  Or do you stick around because you fear that whoever replaces you (if someone replaces you) will hold views completely antithetical to your own? How much indignity is too much indignity?  It's a demonic calculus. So our big boss, Lydia Polgreen, asked four former members of the Trump administration—career public servants who decided that it was better to quit than to stay—to meet at a dive bar in DC and walk us through their thinking. And the war stories they shared are fascinating: candid, furious and funny. It's hard to read this and not feel a deep sense of appreciation for the thousands of people who fill the bureaucracy, as dreaded as that word has become.   And, yes, one of the four regrets quitting very much.
