She is an 18-year-old senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. She is a force.Stoneman Douglas, as you probably know by now, was the site of a mass shooting just one week ago. A former student there gunned down 17 people, including 14 teenagers. In the days since, the surviving students have not been silent in their grief.Gonzalez got up before about 1,000 people in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and spoke with raw passion about the need for the federal government to take action on regulating guns."We are going to be the kids you read about in textbooks," she said. "Not because we're going to be another statistic about mass shooting in America, but because...we are going to be the last mass shooting." Fueled by the crowd, she continued:"Politicians who sit in their gilded House and Senate seats funded by the NRA telling us nothing could have been done to prevent this, we call BS," she said. "They say tougher guns laws do not decrease gun violence. We call BS."She was angry, sad and just incredibly fired up. I teared up watching her, feeling awed by her bravery and so sad that young kids are put through such horror. Yet, incredibly, Gonzalez and her classmates in just a week have brought a renewed vitality to the gun control movement. As HuffPost's Emma Gray points out, young women like Gonzalez have always been vital to social movements -- though often they've received less public credit for doing so. In an excerpt from her new book, A Girl's Guide to Joining the Resistance: A Feminist Handbook on Fighting for Good, Gray has receipts, telling the stories of forceful and pioneering young women you may not have read about in your history class.P.S.
