BIDEN'S VP PIC Joe Biden was uncharacteristically tight-lipped on Tuesday about the final stretch of his search for a vice president. But the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee seemed prepared to talk about at least one leading contender: California Sen. Kamala Harris. As he took questions from reporters, Biden held notes that were photographed by an Associated Press journalist. Harris’ name was scrawled across the top, followed by talking points. “Do not hold grudges.” “Campaigned with me & Jill.” “Talented.” “Great help to campaign.” “Great respect for her.” [HuffPost]
BARR DENIES HE'S TRUMP'S ERRAND BOY Attorney General William Barr made a defiant appearance before a House committee, rejecting claims that he’d improperly interfered in the prosecutorial decision-making process to benefit President Donald Trump’s allies and defending the deployment of militarized federal agents to cities against the wishes of local leaders. Barr has also come under fire for his handling of the Mueller report, plus cases against Trump associates Michael Flynn and Roger Stone, his involvement in the firing of a top federal prosecutor overseeing cases against other Trump associates. 6 STATES BREAK RECORDS FOR CORONAVIRUS DEATHS A half-dozen U.S. states in the South and West reported new one-day records for coronavirus deaths and cases in Texas passed the 400,000 mark as California health officials said Latinos made up more than half its cases. Arkansas, California, Florida, Montana, Oregon and Texas each reported record spikes in fatalities. In the United States more than 1,300 lives were lost on Tuesday, the biggest one-day increase since May. [Reuters] |

PROGRESSIVE SENATORS READY TO HELP CONFIRM TWO ANTI-CHOICE TRUMP JUDGES Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth are progressive Illinois senators who support abortion rights. They both scored the full 100 points on NARAL Pro-Choice America’s 2019 congressional scorecard. And in the coming weeks, they are ready to help confirm two of Trump’s judicial nominees who have records of hostility to women’s reproductive rights and Roe v. Wade. The Democratic senators praised Stephen McGlynn and David Dugan when Trump nominated them to lifetime federal court seats last December and February, respectively. [HuffPost]
TRUMP OFFICIALS CLAIM 'ZERO' LINK BETWEEN CRACKDOWN AND PHOTO OP At separate congressional hearings, two Trump administration officials insisted that the violent police crackdown against protesters at Lafayette Park in Washington on June 1 was about erecting a fence rather than making way for Trump to pose for photos outside a nearby church. Acting U.S. Park Police Chief Gregory Monahan told members of the House Natural Resources Committee that park police faced “unprecedented and sustained” violence from protesters in the days before June 1 and acted with “tremendous restraint” to de-escalate the situation. GRIM REPORT SHOWS HOW MANY ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISTS WERE KILLED LAST YEAR Every week, an average of four environmental activists are killed. The Global Witness Defending Tomorrow report counted 212 people killed last year for their efforts to protect the Earth from the destructive effects of development for oil and gas, mineral extraction, agriculture, polluting waterways, displacing ancestral homes, destroying habitats, logging and other practices -- a new record. “Our figures are almost certainly an underestimate,” the authors write. This comes alongside the news that nearly 3 billion animals were killed or displaced in Australia's fires last year. [HuffPost] |

VIDEO SHOWS NYPD COP PULLING PROTESTER INTO UNMARKED VAN The New York City Police Department has come under scrutiny after videos showed officers pulling a protester into an unmarked van during a demonstration Tuesday in Manhattan against racism and police brutality. Gothamist, citing the protester’s friends, identified her as an 18-year-old transgender woman. Videos shared on social media show the demonstrator being restrained by several NYPD officers before being pulled into the van. “They grabbed [her] like she was rag doll,” a witness said. “They had her arms on her neck and then they drove off.” [HuffPost]
FAUCI RESPONDS TO TRUMP TWEET CLAIMING HE'D MISLED PUBLIC Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading expert on infectious diseases, denied misleading the public “under any circumstances” after Trump retweeted a claim that he had done so. Fauci, appearing on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” was confronted with Trump’s apparent endorsement of criticism of his failure to endorse the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a coronavirus treatment. Trump has repeatedly touted the drug ― and claimed to be taking it himself ― although studies suggest it is ineffective and has potentially serious side effects. [HuffPost]
BIDEN SAYS HE'LL CHOOSE HIS RUNNING MATE NEXT WEEK Joe Biden said he’ll be making a long-anticipated announcement next week: The naming of a running mate on the Democratic presidential ticket he will head. After detailing in Wilmington, Delaware, his plan to combat racial inequality, the presumptive nominee told reporters he is “going to have a choice the first week in August, and I promise I’ll let you know when I do.” Sens. Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Tammy Duckworth of Illinois are among those reportedly on Biden’s shortlist. [HuffPost]
RUSSIAN OPERATIVES SPREADING CORONAVIRUS DISINFO Russian intelligence operatives are using a trio of English-language websites to spread disinformation about the coronavirus pandemic, seeking to exploit a crisis that America is struggling to contain ahead of the presidential election in November. Two Russians who have held senior roles in Moscow’s military intelligence service known as the GRU have been identified as responsible for a disinformation effort directed at American and Western audiences, U.S. government officials said. Meanwhile, here's how quack doctors and GOP operatives also contribute to the spread of misinformation. [AP]
TRUMP CLINGS TO UNPROVEN TREATMENTS Trump’s press conference quickly unraveled on Tuesday as he struggled to defend a video he’d retweeted that is full of false claims about the coronavirus and complained about his low approval rating. Reporters asked Trump repeated questions about his continued support for hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 treatment a day after he retweeted several conspiracy theories about the drug. Multiple clinical trials have found hydroxychloroquine ineffective and dangerous. Trump abruptly ended the briefing after questions about a doctor in his retweeted video, who has a history of claiming a uterine disorder is caused by "demon sperm."[HuffPost]
REPUBLICANS REALLY WANT TO BLOCK YOU FROM SUING OVER COVID-19 The latest stimulus package proposed by Senate Republicans to address the coronavirus pandemic would dramatically limit the ability of consumers and workers to sue corporations that fail to protect them from the disease. The GOP effort to grant businesses, schools and hospitals special liability protections is so extreme that consumer and worker advocates say it would do more than just hinder access to the courts ― it would undercut one of the main incentives companies have for trying to limit the spread of the virus.
