FAUCI PUSHES BACK AGAINST BIZARRE WHITE HOUSE ATTEMPTS TO DISCREDIT HIM Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading expert on infectious disease, responded to White House efforts to discredit him as the coronavirus crisis worsens across wide swaths of the United States ― calling it “bizarre.” “Ultimately, it hurts the president to do that,” Fauci said. He explained: “I think if you talk to reasonable people in the White House, they realize that was a major mistake on their part, because it doesn’t do anything but reflect poorly on them. And I don’t think that that was their intention.” [HuffPost]
CORONAVIRUS INFECTS HALF OF SAN QUENTIN'S PRISONERS The deadly coronavirus outbreak at California’s San Quentin prison is growing at a devastating pace. More than half of the people incarcerated there have been infected with COVID-19 as calls continue for Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) to release more inmates. In late May, San Quentin prison had zero confirmed cases of coronavirus among its around 4,000 inmates. But after over 120 prisoners were transferred in from Chino, California — 25 of whom later tested positive for COVID-19 — an outbreak began. As of Wednesday, over 2,000 people incarcerated at San Quentin have been confirmed infected. [HuffPost]
AMERICANS TRAPPED IN YEMEN PLEAD FOR HELP Advocates say that thousands of U.S. citizens and permanent residents are trapped in Yemen, where the coronavirus has hit an already-collapsed health care system and what’s been dubbed the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. Yemen closed its borders due to the coronavirus in mid-March. The U.S. State Department brought approximately 300 Americans home in June and July, but advocates and families say others are still trapped there, enduring a war, rising coronavirus cases and a growing shortage of medicine and money. BIDEN, MUSK, GATES TWITTER ACCOUNTS HACKED IN BITCOIN SCAM The Twitter accounts of Joe Biden, Barack Obama and at least three tech bigwigs — Tesla’s Elon Musk, Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos — were hacked in a massive digital currency scam. Twitter said the hack appeared to have been a “coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools.” Musk’s Twitter account posted multiple messages promising to “double” payments to his bitcoin address. POSTAL WORKERS ARE DYING IN HEAT WAVES Working for the Postal Service can be a surprisingly dangerous job. While back sprains and dog bites are common for letter carriers, some of the greatest hazards are encapsulated in the agency’s unofficial motto: Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. An analysis of records shows the Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued more than $1.3 million in initial fines against the Postal Service for heat hazards in eight years. And thanks to climate change, it's only going to get hotter. [HuffPost]
KENTUCKY GOV. WARNS GOP WAR ON MASKS WILL SPUR HUGE OUTBREAK Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, became the latest state chief executive to mandate that residents wear face masks in public to slow the spread of the worsening coronavirus pandemic. Less than 24 hours later, state Attorney General Daniel Cameron ― a Republican ― filed a motion that could block Beshear’s edict. “I’m taking the same steps that you see virtually every governor around the country taking,” Beshear told HuffPost on Tuesday. “But I’m the only governor in the country that’s had the state’s attorney general try to stop the steps that it is going to take to keep us safe.” Meanwhile, even Walmart, the nation's largest retailer and a haven for anti-maskers, said it's requiring all customers to wear masks.
