At a time when the Narendra Modi government has said not a single death has taken place in Kashmir, even though ground reports show otherwise, Huffpost India's Betwa Sharma highlights that the visit by European Union lawmakers illustrates how the Modi government’s oppression of Kashmiris is aided and abetted by fringe-elements of the international community. Meanwhile, Opposition parties and senior journalists criticised the visit by the EU lawmakers, at a time when Indian MPs have been stopped time and again from visiting Kashmir. In more bad news, Kannada actors harassed movie goers for not standing up while the national anthem played at a theatre in Bengaluru.

As EU MPs Visit Kashmir, The Modi Govt Is Hiding The Death Toll

This week, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah said, “not a single bullet has been fired nor a death reported in Kashmir” since the abrogation of Article 370. Shah is wrong; there have been at least four other deaths, which families claim have occurred as a result of the activity of security, including asphyxiation by tear gas, but the government refuses to acknowledge these deaths let alone investigate. Today, the Indian government is shepherding a private delegation of European Union parliamentarians from an assemblage of far-right parties including France’s National Rally, the UK’s Brexit Party, Italy’s Lega Nord, and Spain’s Vox, on a tightly controlled visit to Kashmir.

EU Lawmakers In Kashmir Sparks Criticism Of Modi Government

This will be the first foreign group to visit Kashmir since August 5, when Article 370 was abrogated. This comes after members of the US Congress had expressed concern over the lack of access to media and foreign delegations to the state. But the move has not gone down well with many politicians, including those from the BJP.
