Kyles is a survivor of rape and domestic violence who runs Walking Into A New Life, a small nonprofit that helps women rebuild their lives after leaving abusive relationships."Everybody tells women to leave abusive relationships, but no one realizes the trauma and the difficulties women face after they leave," she told HuffPost. Her most common lecture is called "I Left... Now What?"Kyles said women who have fled domestic violence need financial support and sources of self-esteem, adding that Memphis could use a microfinance model that would help these women make a living and rebuild a life for themselves and any children they have. And, she said, the story of crime in Memphis too often ignores domestic violence. The homicide rate rose in the city last year, and about 32 of those homicides were connected to domestic violence, Kyles said, yet Memphians and the press often glossed over violence against women.Darrell Cobbins is following in his grandfather’s footsteps by being a black business owner in Memphis. But women- and minority-owned businesses have faced several hurdles to success. “The majority of the wealth has resided in the white community,” Cobbins told HuffPost. “A black businessperson has to work hard to develop relationships that could be beneficial to the growth of your business.”The city is working to fix that.Olliette Murry-Drobot was subjected to domestic abuse before she was even born. Now she’s working to protect and support kids who have been hurt, too.Plus: How this service group is working to make Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream a reality in Memphis.Join us virtually on the bus!
