Click here And So Jedidiah Gave All of Hello Highliners,Every once in a while, a writer turns in a profile that's so precisely and profoundly observed that you wind up feeling like you know the subject in real life and have to remind yourself you've never met. Our latest piece, from Ben Austen, is one of those stories. It's about Jedidiah Brown, a young activist in Chicago, and it begins with the harrowing moment earlier this year when he almost committed suicide on Facebook Live. In tracing what brought Jedidiah to this dark place, Ben reveals the hidden trauma experienced by many young activists of the Black Lives Matter generation. Jedidiah and others assume an almost unfathomable set of burdens in their desperate efforts to help their neighborhoods. He races to the scene of shooting after shooting on Chicago's South Side, hoping to mediate between warring gang factions or to comfort grieving families and ensure they are treated fairly by police. He offers nearly every available surface in his small apartment to young people who have nowhere to go. And the rise of Trump only makes this work more urgent, more consuming. I won't say much more about the journey that Jedidiah goes on, but it's a stunning piece of writing by Ben, whose soon-to-be-published book will be a must-read. And a huge thanks to Jon Lowenstein, who has spent years working on the South Side, for his searing photographs.—Rachel MorrisHighline combines the rigor, depth and obsessiveness of the best magazine journalism with the experimentation that becomes possible when no paper or staples are involved.
