A wreath hangs from the balcony on the second floor, marking the location where Martin Luther King Jr. was shot in 1968. Even before walking through the door, you're immersed in the living, breathing history of the civil rights movement.Partway through HuffPost’s self-guided tour, Melissa Radzimski spoke to Faith Morris, the museum's chief marketing and external affairs officer. Morris said the museum wants its visitors to recognize that the civil rights movement "never really ended." The fight for equality didn’t stop with the march to Montgomery or the Memphis sanitation workers strike."Civil rights is not a spectator's sport,” Morris said. "[Every time] something major happens in the news, 100 new people come to the museum,” she added — a reminder that history is still happening.Photo courtesy of Karla PerezKarla, who lives in Texas, and Ana, who lives in Alaska, told us about coming to the U.S., growing up undocumented and becoming activists.Courtesy of @ladymarie1989Check out the most Instagram-friendly places in Birmingham.Sara Saxon of Birmingham told us what’s popular in her city. “Not only do you have the classic Southern Belle style, but there’s also a trendier, edgier side,” she said.
