While in West Virginia, Jenavieve Hatch spoke to Sharon Lewis, who has been the executive director of Women’s Health Center of West Virginia since 1998. The center is the state’s last remaining abortion provider. Lewis, who has lived in Charleston her whole life, told HuffPost about several challenges that her clinic faces. For example, a crisis pregnancy center moved in next door a couple of years ago. (CPCs are often funded by religious groups and are notorious for using misleading tactics to draw in pregnant women seeking abortion care and convince them to continue with their pregnancies.) “There was a gay club there before,” Lewis said. “But [the CPC] moved in, changed their name to Woman’s Choice — which is very ironic, inaccurate and deceptive — and have made every effort to confuse patients since.” Lewis said that members of Woman’s Choice have even sneaked onto the clinic’s property to post signs that mislead patients and redirect them to the CPC. “We’re doing everything that we possibly can to keep women from getting confused and going over there,” she said.
