GOP LACKS VOTES TO BLOCK BOLTON Senate Republican leaders do not yet have the votes to block Democrats from summoning John Bolton or other witnesses at President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell conceded to fellow GOP senators. It could be a major hurdle for Trump’s hopes to end the trial with a quick acquittal. [AP]
FORMER CHIEF OF STAFF KELLY: I BELIEVE BOLTON Former White House chief of staff John Kelly said he believes Bolton’s assertion that Trump withheld aid from Ukraine to pressure that country into announcing an investigation of Joe Biden. “If John Bolton says that in the book, I believe John Bolton,” Kelly said at a lecture series in Sarasota, Florida. PALESTINIANS REJECT TRUMP 'PEACE PLAN' Trump unveiled his long-awaited Middle East plan, winning immediate praise from a beaming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but a swift rejection from the Palestinians, who called it “nonsense.” [AP]
CORONAVIRUS CASES OVERTAKE SARS IN CHINA At least 132 people are dead and almost 6,000 cases have been confirmed in mainland China, as the Wuhan coronavirus spreads across Asia and the rest of the world. Nearly 60 million people are under partial or full lockdowns in Chinese cities. There are more than 80 confirmed cases outside of China, including at least five in the U.S. [CNN]
REPORTER SUSPENDED OVER KOBE TWEETS SPEAKS OUT The Washington Post reporter who was suspended after tweeting a story about the 2003 rape allegation against basketball star Kobe Bryant on the day he died called on the newspaper’s executive editor to explain the decision to punish her and explain how the paper planned to protect journalists for speaking the truth. COP WHO KILLED HANDCUFFED MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER Prince Georges County, Maryland, police Officer Michael Owen Jr. will be charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of 43-year-old William Green on Monday night. Owen fired seven shots inside his police car, killing Green, who was handcuffed in the front seat.[HuffPost] |

TRUMP LAWYERS MAY HAVE UNDERMINED THEIR CASE AGAINST OBAMACARE Trump’s Justice Department lawyers who are trying to get rid of the Affordable Care Act made a curious statement in their court papers: They said the law’s supposedly unconstitutional provision has no practical impact. That raises the question of why courts should even hear the lawsuit, let alone end a program on which tens of millions depend for health care. [HuffPost]
BIDEN LED BUDGET TALKS WHERE SOCIAL SECURITY CUTS WERE ON THE TABLE Former Vice President Joe Biden led a small team of lawmakers in 2011 that considered a Social Security cut as part of a broader package of legislation designed to reduce the federal budget deficit. The talks didn’t pan out, but Biden’s participation exemplifies his desire to cut deals with Republicans and his political moderation, traits he’s highlighted on the presidential campaign trail. ARIZONA BILL WOULD BAN TRANS WOMEN FROM SPORTS TEAMS Transgender girls and women would be barred from participating in sports on the team that aligns with their gender identity under a proposed Arizona law. GOP Rep. Nancy Barton's proposal is co-sponsored by 22 Republican House members, and is the latest on a list of over a dozen states with bills focusing on transgender young people. [AP]
IRANIAN AMERICANS FEEL TRAPPED Mana Kharrazi is the lead plaintiff in one of several lawsuits challenging Trump’s executive order banning travel to the U.S. from seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iran. “I’ve never been in the same room with my mom and all her siblings. I know I might never be able to,” Kharrazi said. “There’s a whole side of a family that I may never see or know.” [HuffPost]
WHITE SUPREMACIST CHURCH KILLER APPEALS DEATH PENALTY White supremacist Dylann Roof appealed his convictions and death sentence in the 2015 massacre of nine black church members in South Carolina, arguing that he was suffering from schizophrenia and other psychological disorders when he represented himself at his capital trial.
