QUICK ACQUITTAL, NO WITNESSES Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) announced his opposition to calling witnesses at President Donald Trump’s Senate impeachment trial, signaling that the GOP will likely be successful in blocking the testimony of John Bolton and wrapping up the trial in a day or two. Friday’s session is set to go late into the night, as senators debate and vote on the witness question, and Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts could be asked to break a tie. [HuffPost]
‘INAPPROPRIATE’ BUT APPARENTLY NOT ACTIONABLE? Sen. Alexander said the president was “inappropriate” in asking Ukraine’s leader to investigate Trump’s political opponent and withholding aid, but the Senate can’t remove the president from office over “inappropriate” actions. [HuffPost]
CORONAVIRUS NOW GLOBAL HEALTH EMERGENCY The State Department issued a “Do Not Travel” advisory -- its strongest warning -- advising Americans to stay out of China amid the coronavirus outbreak. The World Health Organization declared the rapidly spreading sickness a global health emergency, which allows countries to coordinate responses. The mounting toll includes at least 9,600 infections and 213 deaths. [HuffPost]
RAND PAUL STORMS OUT Chief Justice John Roberts, the presiding officer at Trump’s impeachment trial, rebuffed Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) attempt to ask a question that named the alleged Ukraine whistleblower whose complaint kicked off the impeachment investigation. Paul then stormed out of the chamber and held a press conference where he named the individual, then insisted he wasn’t outing anyone. [HuffPost]
BREXIT DAY ARRIVES Britain officially exits the European Union today at 11 p.m. GMT, but it doesn’t mark the end of three years of political chaos. Barely anything will change in Britons’ day-to-day lives, but negotiations will kick off during a transition period that lasts until Dec. 31. [HuffPost UK]
POMPEO’S TANTRUM BOOSTS NPR DONATIONS NPR has seen an “extraordinary” bounce in donations after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo yelled at reporter Mary Louise Kelly for daring to ask him about Ukraine. Listeners sent messages of support across the network's 1,000 member stations. [HuffPost] |

DEPORTATION WITHOUT WARNING Immigration and Customs Enforcement suddenly deported a Yemeni man back to a war-torn country where he fears for his life. Undocumented New Yorker Hazaea Alomaisi regularly checked in with immigration officials over his two decades of living in the U.S. His sudden removal is emblematic of a Trump immigration policy that ends prosecutorial discretion over deportations. WARREN TROLLS ROBERTS Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) used the question-and-answer portion of the impeachment trial to make a point about the credibility of the Supreme Court. The look on Chief Justice Roberts’ face after he read it says it all. [HuffPost]
