Plus, marriage vows for today's times

Readers are always interested in what goes on behind closed doors — both bedroom doors and the doors of therapists’ offices. Our own Kelsey Borresen addressed both this week, asking mental health professionals about the concerns their clients are bringing up most frequently in remote sessions now.
Two months into the pandemic, there are some issues that are coming up over and over again. People are worried about finances, the health of loved ones’ — and of course, venting about friction with their partners during what one therapist called “forced togetherness.” Go here for others.

Lindsey and Bri Leaverton were set to marry in Austin in the spring, until coronavirus came along. Disappointed that they could no longer have the wedding of their Pinterest dreams, they opted for the next best thing: A drive-in wedding at Doc’s Drive In Theatre in Buda, Texas. Eighty-five cars filled with their nearest and dearest rolled in, and guests tuned into the ceremony though a radio station and watched the ceremony on big movie screens. “When we said ‘I do,’ everyone ‘applauded’ with car honking, flashing lights, decorated cars, I even think there was a cow bell I heard,” Bri said. |

Traditional marriage vows go a little something like this: "I, ___, take you, ___, to be my wedded husband/wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part…” But in the current climate — now that we’re all stuck under the same roof for way more time than we imagined — we think they’d sound a bit different. We asked married folks to share the vows they would have included had they known about coronavirus. |
