WHAT'S BREWING
LEAKED BODYCAM FOOTAGE OF GEORGE FLOYD Leaked footage shows George Floyd begging police not to shoot him minutes before his death by police officers in Minneapolis on May 25. “OK, Mr. Officer, please don’t shoot me. Please, man,” Floyd said when officers approached as he sat in his car. One officer had a gun drawn and aimed at Floyd’s head. “I just lost my mom, man,” Floyd said in the footage first obtained by The Daily Mail. “Please don’t shoot me, Mr. Officer, please.” Floyd also apologized throughout the video as the cops cursed at him. 260 GEORGIA SCHOOL DISTRICT WORKERS CAUGHT OR EXPOSED TO COVID-19 Some 260 employees of Gwinnett County Public Schools, the largest school district in Georgia, have either tested positive or been exposed to COVID-19 and will be quarantined ahead of the start of the fall semester next week. District spokesperson Sloan Roach told reporters the high number of COVID-19 cases among district employees, which became apparent a day after they first reported for work, is still “fluid” as reports continue to come in. FERGUSON PREPARED AMERICA FOR THIS MOMENT The unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014 was sparked by the police killing of Michael Brown on Aug. 9 and reignited the Black Lives Matter movement that began with the acquittal one year earlier of a self-styled neighborhood watchman who killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in 2012. The protests and unconstitutional police response on the streets of a St. Louis suburb seized the nation’s attention and brought about some modest change. Yet those reforms already pale in comparison to the swift changes the nation has witnessed since Minneapolis police officers killed George Floyd on May 25. [HuffPost]
THE U.S. HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO FAIL The American health care system leaves us all vulnerable to massive costs and uneven access, even under the best of circumstances. But when the economy goes south, things get really awful. The coronavirus pandemic and the United States’ feckless response to the outbreak has triggered a historic economic downturn that has cost tens of millions of jobs. Because almost half of the country ― about 160 million workers, spouses and dependents ― get their health coverage through an employer, those lost jobs almost always mean lost health insurance. RED STATE DEMOCRATS AIM TO WIN ON EXPANDING MEDICAID Democrats in Senate races in North Carolina, Colorado, Kansas, Montana and Alabama all plan to make their support of Medicaid expansion a central part of their campaigns. Even before the coronavirus pandemic, polling showed voters nationwide say health care was the most important issue in the 2020 election, and that they trust Democrats more than Republicans to handle it. Voters have approved Medicaid expansion in referendums in Utah, Idaho, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Meanwhile, Trump's "complete" health plan has joined the long list of his unkept promises. [HuffPost]
ISAIAS MAKES LANDFALL IN NORTHERN CAROLINA Hurricane Isaias has made landfall near Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, and is moving up the East Coast with heavy rains and high winds. The hurricane touched down just after 11 p.m. on Monday with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. Coastal shops and restaurants closed early, power began to flicker at oceanfront hotels and even the most adventurous of beachgoers abandoned the sand. The U.S. National Hurricane Center warned oceanside home dwellers to brace for storm surges up to 5 feet. [AP] |
