HOUSE COMMITTEE CALLS ON POSTMASTER GENERAL TO TESTIFY Top congressional Democrats called on Trump’s appointed postmaster general to testify this month on changes that have stoked fears they are aimed at holding up mail-in ballots ahead of the November election. The Postal Service’s internal watchdog has begun investigating a wave of cost-cutting kicked off by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy that has slowed mail delivery around the country, alarming lawmakers ahead of the Nov. 3 election when up to half of U.S. voters could cast ballots by mail. NYPD UNION ENDORSES TRUMP FOR PRESIDENT Seeking to amplify his law-and-order message, Trump told hundreds of New York police officers that “no one will be safe in Biden’s America” if he loses in November. “This guy has been taking your dignity away and your respect,” Trump said of Biden. “And I’m telling you on Nov. 3 you’re going to be getting it back.” [HuffPost]
BIDEN SENDS CONDOLENCES TO TRUMP Biden expressed his condolences to Trump on Sunday following the death of his younger brother, Robert Trump, saying, “I hope you know that our prayers are with you all.” Kamala Harris echoed his sentiments in her own Twitter post to Trump and his family. [HuffPost]
TRUMP REWRITES HISTORY ON PREEXISTING CONDITIONS -- AGAIN Trump and his Republican allies have spent the last few years trying to take away preexisting condition protections in health care, through legislation to repeal “Obamacare” and a series of executive actions to undermine the law. More recently, Trump has backed a lawsuit urging the Supreme Court to wipe out the Affordable Care Act ― and with it the preexisting condition proviso. With his recent promise of an executive order on health care, Trump is trying to make voters forget this record. [HuffPost]
THE UNFINISHED WORK OF THE 19TH AMENDMENT In the middle of the blazing summer of 1848, more than 300 people gathered in Seneca Falls, New York, for the nation’s very first women’s rights conference. Decades later, in August 1920, the United States finally ratified the 19th Amendment, most often remembered as the moment when women got the right to vote. But the 19th was not a guarantee of enfranchisement for all women -- rather a guarantee that states could not bar people from voting due to their sex. This left ample room for states to suppress and disenfranchise on the basis of wealth and race. [HuffPost]
U.S.: NO BAILOUT FOR LEBANON There can be no financial bailout for Lebanon, a senior U.S. official said, calling on the country’s political leaders to heed popular calls for change, real reform and an end to endemic corruption. David Hale, U.S. undersecretary of state for political affairs, said the U.S. and its allies will respond to “systemic reforms with sustained financial support.” He also called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the Aug. 4 blast that killed nearly 180 people and wounded thousands, adding that an FBI team is arriving this weekend to take part, at the invitation of Lebanese authorities.
