Last night, we sat down with our soon-to-be second grader to talk through the available options for the too-quickly-approaching year. We talked about what a “normal” day would look like with both options, and told him what we were thinking. We gave him space to ask questions — of which he had many, mostly about safety. From the beginning of this, we’ve been open with him, in age-appropriate ways, about what’s going on. He’s an anxious kid, so we need to straddle the fine line between keeping him shielded from the full truth and telling him too much.
He was receptive, and appreciative (I think), that we wanted to hear what he had to say. He’s obviously thinking about this — perhaps not as much as we are — and worried. So what do you do with a kid who’s anxious about being back in “public” while knowing full well you can’t be the kind of teacher he needs you to be at home?
I’m not the only parent thinking about this right now, which is why I’m SO excited to speak with Dr. Becky Kennedy via Zoom, hopefully with you all there, on Wednesday night. She’ll address navigating your kids back-to-school anxiety, no matter what the school year looks like for them. She’ll answer questions about how she’s seeing their anxiety manifest itself most frequently now, and how to help your kid. We’ll have plenty of time for Q&A so bring questions! If you don’t already have a ticket, get one here.
See you Wednesday at 8pm EDT. |
