MONSTER HURRICANE LAURA MAKES LANDFALL Hurricane Laura made landfall in Louisiana early Thursday as a strong Category 4 storm; it was downgraded to a Category 3 a few hours later. More than half a million people were urged to flee their homes. The National Hurricane Center issued dire warnings of extensive damage and catastrophic storm surges.
