TRUMP 'WILL DETERMINE' WHETHER TO ACCEPT THE ELECTION RESULT AFTERWARD Reporters asked variations of the question "will President Trump accept the election result" twice at a Wednesday afternoon press briefing with White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany. The answer should have been easy — but as Trump himself has said on several occasions, McEnany suggested that the president may not commit to the election results if he loses. Ultimately, said McEnany, Trump will “see what happens and make a determination in the aftermath.” Here’s the thing: Trump doesn’t get to make that determination. [HuffPost]
TRUMP RAVED ABOUT STOCK MARKET RECOVERY. THE ACTUAL ECONOMY IS MUCH WORSE. On Tuesday, the S&P 500, a measurement indicating the financial success of large companies listed in the stock market, posted record highs. To some, it may seem counterintuitive that any company could flourish during a deadly outbreak that’s shuttering local economies around the country and, in turn, forcing the U.S. unemployment rate above 10%. Critics have long argued the stock market is a poor indicator of the country’s overall economic performance, and Tuesday’s resounding stock market success juxtaposed against widespread economic despair brought that reality into stark relief. TRUMP'S ACTING PUBLIC LANDS CHIEF CAN HEAD THE AGENCY INDEFINITELY It was through a series of controversial ― if not illegal ― temporary reappointments that William Perry Pendley, an anti-public lands extremist, ascended to the top of the Bureau of Land Management, an agency that oversees 245 million acres of federal land. In late May, approximately two weeks before one of those controversial extensions was set to expire, Pendley — a former property rights lawyer who spent his career arguing that public lands should not even exist — crafted and signed an order to keep himself at the helm of the bureau indefinitely. IMMIGRANT DETENTION CENTERS FED MUSLIMS PORK DURING PANDEMIC A Florida immigration facility repeatedly served pork to Muslim detainees even though the immigrants eschew pork in accordance with their faith, several civil rights organizations said. Detainees at the Krome Service Processing Center, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Miami, were given the choice of pre-packaged pork-based meals or expired halal meals at least two to three times a week, according to a letter to ICE sent by Muslim Advocates, Americans for Immigrant Justice and the law firm King & Spalding LLP. APPLE IS FIRST US COMPANY VALUED AT $2 TRILLION Apple is the first U.S. company to boast a market value of $2 trillion, just two years after it became the first to reach $1 trillion. Apple shares have gained nearly 60% this year as the company overcame the shutdown of factories in China that produce the iPhone and the closure of its retail sales amid the coronavirus pandemic. The company’s hugely loyal customer base trusts its products so much that they continued to buy iPhones and other devices online while stuck at home. Apple recently reported blowout earnings for the April-June quarter. [AP]
PUTIN CRITIC HOSPITALIZED FOR POSSIBLE POISONING Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is in a serious condition in a Siberian hospital after suffering severe symptoms of what his spokesperson said she believed was a deliberate poisoning. Navalny, 44, is unconscious, in intensive care and on an artificial lung ventilator, spokesperson Kira Yarmysh said. “We assume that Alexei was poisoned with something mixed into his tea. It was the only thing that he drank in the morning. Doctors say the toxin was absorbed faster through the hot liquid. Alexei is now unconscious,” Yarmysh said. [Reuters] |
