Take a good, hard look

When you think about blackmail, what comes to mind? Sinister plotlines in movies and TV shows? Corrupt judges and CEOs? Money?
Emotional blackmail is different in that it’s done by the people who mean the most to you — your partner, family or friends. Let’s say you share a dog with your partner, but the dog is technically your partner’s; he adopted it right before you got together. In the middle of an argument, he says, “If you leave me, you’ll never see the dog again.”
Other examples include reminding someone of their duties (“this is what family does for each other”) or something they’ve done for you in the past (“remember when I loaned you money in college?”).

Pride month is certainly different this year. First, many celebrations and parades were canceled due to coronavirus; then some were turned into Black Lives Matter solidarity marches. It’s important to note the link between Pride and BLM: We would not have a modern LGBTQ movement if it weren’t for the Black queer community. Pride began with a series of riots and protests led by queer Black trailblazers such as Marsha P. Johnson and Stormé DeLarverie in response to a police raid of popular NYC gay club The Stonewall Inn in 1969. |

Sure, your city may be opening up, but we bet you’re still spending the majority of your time at home, maybe with your partner. Well, we hope so anyway — stay safe out there, people! But day 4,830,985 into quarantine (how long has it been?) you’re bound to have gotten on each other’s nerves at least once per day. Look no further than the husbands and wives of Twitter to commiserate. |
