Mothers who die by suicide are often looked at as rare, one-off examples. But post-partum depression is a serious widespread issue that can have obviously devastating consequences. For women, the time after giving birth can be fraught in the best of circumstances -- and these days so many of us need to back at work so quickly or live far from family support, making the situation even more difficult."While postpartum suicide is rare compared to the general population, it does account for a significant one in five postpartum deaths and is said to be the second leading cause of death for women in the postpartum period," Pearson writes.
