No Images? Click here As President Donald Trump's secretary of education, Betsy DeVos has rolled back Obama-era protections for trans students, women and victims of sexual violence. On Friday, HuffPost's Rebecca Klein broke the news that LGBTQ employees of the Department of Education confronted DeVos in a meeting last year. We asked Klein about her story. How did this story come about? More than a year ago, I filed a Freedom of Information Act request for internal communications within the Department of Education about the White House's decision to rescind former President Barack Obama’s transgender student protections. I was curious about the topic because the Education Secretary was reportedly opposed to the rescission. I had kind of forgotten about the FOIA until I received the documents this week. What was the most challenging thing about reporting, writing or editing this story? Many of the documents I received were redacted, so it was challenging to piece together the internal communications while making sure I had the story right. What did you find that was most surprising? I don’t know if it was surprising, but the emails revealed a lot of internal confusion about whether and when the protections were going to be rescinded. The lawyers who were tasked with providing legal justification for the move didn’t seem to know what the plan was. Also, it was perhaps somewhat surprising that DeVos made the effort to meet with employees who were obviously upset with her actions. I know that the Department eventually felt compelled to respond to this story. How did the Department respond to your initial questions about this? Initially, the department said they needed some time to confirm my version of events because it was so early on in the administration and they didn’t have the institutional knowledge. I don’t think they were upset about the story — they said these are the types of meetings DeVos seeks out. What do you want readers to take away? The internal communications revealed a unique tension between career civil servants and new appointees. Holdover employees from the Obama administration who helped craft the transgender student guidance are now left to undo something they may have been proud of.
