No Images? Click here Hello Highliners, There are only a few journalists capable of making you look at the world differently with each big piece they publish. Mike Hobbes is one of them. Whether he's writing about how financially screwed millennials are or why gay men still suffer from an epidemic of loneliness or why there's really no such thing as "ethical shopping," he's a true master of identifying (and then burrowing deep, deep into) the huge shifts in our culture that you may not have even realized were happening. And now, for his latest trick, he is blowing up everything you think you know about obesity. His argument is intriguingly multi-faceted, so I won't try to distill it here, but suffice it to say that some of the ways I think have been forever changed as a result of editing this story. For instance, I didn't fully understand the bleak science on why diets don't work or the straight-up cruel ways that doctors treat fat people. And beyond all the surprising personal stories about how being fat affects your love life or your view of other fat people, Hobbes's piece is just deeply humane. It's moving. It'll make you want to treat people better. Now, a word about the photos. Most images of fat people in news articles are messed up. Like, they're usually from the neck down and depict their subjects as sloppy, unwashed ghouls. So, we asked six people from the piece to tell us how they wanted to be photographed, and we're in love with the results. Huge applause for Finlay Mackay (who's shot a couple other stories for us) and for Donica Ida, our brand-new creative director who just got married last week! Happy reading, P.S.
