No Images? Click here A few weeks ago, I spoke with Sarah Lacey, the founder of Chairman Mom, a really cool private online community (and newsletter) for working parents. Our conversation broached a wide-range of topics, from what her children are like to her favorite kids’ book (more on that in a bit).I always love speaking to fellow moms, in part because I get to have them as a sounding board for advice, but also because I get to hear what their journey in motherhood has been like. And Lacey’s take on the surprises of motherhood was, as expected, inspirational. She said: “Every single thing I’d heard about motherhood was wrong. I’d been told my entire life that as soon as I became a mother I’d be incapacitated. I’d be covered in vomit and wouldn’t care about work anymore. Motherhood to me wasn’t overhyped, it was underhyped. I found I was better at everything. I was more ambitious. I’ve made more money since becoming a mother. I’m a better manager. I developed superpowers. It’s not that it’s been easy… There are a lot of really hard things we’re encouraged to do as a society. When someone quits a job to start a startup… we think it’s amazing. Same thing with super-marathon runners. But somehow women have gotten tricked to think that we can’t continue to build an ambitious career and do one of the most amazing things we can do as human beings. I don’t know why I believed it. It’s cross-training all muscles. Everything about motherhood I find shocking.”I mean PREACH woman. And, if you’re curious, her kids’ favorite books are the Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willems, and titles they’ve found through the Little Feminist Book Club.Food for thought: Yes I’m aware that in many parts of the country it’s cold outside, but why are some people just always cold?! Our Wellness section did a little digging and found some answers that’ll warm up even the chilliest of people.More stories from the trenches: P.S.
