No Images? Click here Hello Highliners,We often hear about women being forced to cross state lines in order to obtain abortions—but what about the women who make similar journeys to give birth? Rebecca Grant uncovers a tight-knit sisterhood of mothers in Alabama who don't want to have their child in a hospital, but can't give birth at home because midwives aren't permitted to practice in the state. These moms make nerve-wracking journeys just over the state line, often while in labor. They give birth in obscure locations—hotel rooms, Airbnbs and RVs, aided by a network of underground midwives. The risks they take are especially striking when you consider that Alabama once had a rich tradition of midwifery—led by black midwives during Jim Crow—that has virtually been erased from history. Rebecca's story is a rare and intimate look at this world of clandestine motherhood. The stunning photographs are by Adrienne Grunwald.Happy holidays from all of us at Highline, |
