Just Hold On

I didn't send out this newsletter last week. The pandemic. The quarantine. The kids home from school. The relentless news that gets worse every day. There is a lot going on.

Coronavirus doesn't seem to care too much about gender or economics or sexism, or many of the topics I normally email you about. I hope you are healthy and staying safe. What's happening now is first and foremost a health crisis. The most important thing is to rein it in, flatten the curve and save lives.

Still, there are some things to know that are more in the wheelhouse of this newsletter:

That is, if you have time to read. Weirdly, even though we're all stuck at home, a lot of women are too busy to read emails. Many are home pulling super double- and triple-duty, holding done jobs remotely, trying to homeschool their kids and figure out how to manage a household when you can never leave the house. Remember to take it easy on yourself. (Epidemics are hard on women in very specific ways, according this fascinating piece in The Atlantic.)

Anyway, here are the things:

Our overlords have somehow managed to figure out ways to specifically hurt women, even now, during a massive public health crisis. Some states are using the virus as an excuse to ban abortion, my colleague Melissa Jeltsen reports.

And, even though Congress has so far passed two big emergency bills devoted to this crisis, with another one on the way, they still haven't passed any meaningful paid family leave or paid sick leave.

Guess who needs those policies the most? Women who make up the majority of low-income workers.

That's all for now. Feel free to drop me a line and let me know how you're doing: emily.peck@huffpost.com.

P.S. Are you wondering why there's a photo of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo at the top of this newsletter? It's because there's a thing going on now where women in New York are crushing on him. And he's bringing comfort to a lot of people here, men and women. So I figured maybe he'd bring you all some comfort, too. What would bring comfort next week?
