OVAL OFFICE DEBACLE OVER EUROPE 'TRAVEL BAN' In a strange oval office speech Wednesday night, President Donald Trump addressed the coronavirus pandemic by focusing on banning travel from Europe. He later had to clarify that the ban exempts Americans, permanent residents and their families. He also confusingly said the ban would apply to trade, but tweeted later that it only affected "people." He said nothing about the lack of available testing across the country, and ignored many crucial aspects of the public health crisis. [HuffPost]


NBA SUSPENDS SEASON AFTER PLAYER TESTS POSITIVE The NBA announced it is suspending the 2019-2020 basketball season after a player tested positive for COVID-19. "The NBA will use this hiatus to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the coronavirus pandemic," the league said in a statement. [HuffPost]


U.S. CORONAVIRUS CASES PASS 1,200 The novel coronavirus has infected more than 124,500 people and killed over 4,600 worldwide, according to the World Health Organization, which has officially declared the virus a pandemic. The U.S. has over 1,200 cases. Greece has reported its first coronavirus death, and Tom Hanks and his wife, actress Rita Wilson, have been diagnosed with coronavirus and are being treated in Australia's Queensland state. [CNN]


EXPERT CHECKS PEOPLE WHO COMPARE VIRUS TO FLU The nation’s leading infectious diseases expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, is setting people straight for suggesting COVID-19 is less lethal than the seasonal flu. "The mortality for seasonal flu is 0.1 [percent]," he told Fox News’ Sean Hannity. "The mortality for this is about 2, 2½ percent. It’s probably lower than that, it’s probably closer to 1. But even if it’s 1, it’s 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu. You’ve got to make sure that people understand that.” [HuffPost]


FLOYD MAYWEATHER'S EX-GIRLFRIEND FOUND DEAD Josie Harris, the mother of three of famed boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s four children, was found dead in a car outside a home in California. Harris dated the 12-time world champion boxer between 1995 and 2010, with their relationship turning rocky and even violent. In 2010, after they broke up, Mayweather was arrested for domestic violence involving Harris, and sentenced to two months in jail. [HuffPost]


CHELSEA MANNING ATTEMPTED SUICIDE IN JAIL Imprisoned Army whistleblower Chelsea Manning is recovering in a hospital after attempting to kill herself Wednesday. The revelation comes two days before Manning, a former Army intelligence analyst, is scheduled to appear before a judge ruling on a motion to terminate the sanctions she’s facing for refusing to testify in an investigation into WikiLeaks. SENATE GOP BLOCKS EMERGENCY PAID SICK LEAVE BILL 

Democrats hoping to pass an emergency paid sick leave bill to deal with fallout from the coronavirus were stymied by Senate Republicans. Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) tried to speed the measure for a vote on the Senate floor through a procedural maneuver, but an objection from Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) prevented the bill from bypassing the Republican-controlled health committee. [HuffPost]


ATTACK ON IRAQ BASE KILLS 2 AMERICANS, BRITISH NATIONAL Two American service members and a British national were killed in a rocket attack on a military base in Taji, Iraq. One U.S. official said is likely the work of Iran, raising the prospect that military tensions could flare up in the region once again. The U.S. will go after the perpetrators inside Iraq, a second official told CNN, adding that Iranian-backed fighters or Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps were likely behind the attack. [CNN]


WHY BERNIE WON'T QUIT Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday made a defiant case for his liberal policy agenda despite suffering big losses in the Democratic primaries this week, saying he planned to continue his bid for the presidency. But he acknowledged that he was “losing the debate over electability” to his rival, Joe Biden. [New York Times]


HOW DELHI'S POLICE TURNED AGAINST MUSLIMS More evidence is emerging that the Delhi police, who are under the direct command of Indian president Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government and have very few Muslim officers, concertedly moved against Muslims and at times actively helped the Hindu mobs that rampaged in New Delhi in late February, burning down Muslim homes and targeting Muslim families. U.S. WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYERS PROTEST UNEQUAL PAY In a stark message about unequal pay, the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team wore their jerseys inside out during the national anthem before their match against Japan Wednesday. Worn inside out, U.S. Soccer Federation’s logo is obscured, but the stars representing the team’s World Cup victories remain visible. Last year, 28 members of the team filed a lawsuit demanding equal pay and benefits that are offered to the men’s team. [HuffPost]


OUTBREAK FORCES GRETA THUNBERG TO TAKE STRIKE ONLINE 

Environmental activist Greta Thunberg is taking her weekly climate strikes online amid the coronavirus crisis. As more countries order citizens to avoid large public gatherings in order to stop the spread of the disease, the 17-year-old Swede encouraged her Twitter followers to “find new ways to create public awareness & advocate for change that don’t involve too big crowds.” [HuffPost]
