MNUCHIN WARNS: 20% UNEMPLOYMENT WITHOUT STIMULUS Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin reportedly warned Republican senators the U.S. unemployment rate could hit 20% if they failed to act on a proposed coronavirus rescue package and there was lasting economic damage. Mnuchin met with senators to persuade them to pass a $1 trillion stimulus package that would send cash to Americans within two weeks and backstop airlines and other companies. [Reuters]

NYT EDITORIAL: U.S. MUST MOBILIZE AGAINST VIRUS LIKE A WAR The New York Times editorial board called for the U.S. to be put a wartime footing to fight the coronavirus pandemic. The editorial -- headlined “Stop Saying That Everything Is Under Control. It Isn’t.” — said tackling the crisis will “require a new, collective way of thinking about public health and society as a whole.” [HuffPost]

GOP, WHITE HOUSE DEMAND PAID SICK LEAVE CUTS Under pressure from the White House and business groups, House Democrats agreed to further water down paid sick and family leave provisions in the coronavirus emergency bill currently awaiting a Senate vote. Democrats had already vastly scaled back their proposals. Still, the original compromise bill included 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave for workers with COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, symptoms of COVID-19 or those caring for others who are sick. BIDEN TAKES ALL Joe Biden won smashing victories in Democratic presidential primaries in Florida, Illinois and Arizona on Tuesday night, further cementing his advantage over Bernie Sanders in a nomination race soon to be frozen in place for weeks as growing fears over the coronavirus pandemic cause voters to lose interest and states to delay primaries. [HuffPost]

CHINA EXPELS U.S. JOURNALISTS IN ESCALATING SPAT China announced it was retaliating against U.S. restrictions on Chinese journalists, with actions that include rescinding the press credentials of American correspondents for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post. The move escalates a tit-for-tat between China and the United States that saw Washington this month slash the number of Chinese nationals permitted to work at the U.S. offices of major Chinese state-owned media outlets. [Reuters]

FLORIDA'S AG UNCONSTITUTIONALLY CONTRACTED WITH TRUMP DORAL Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, the state’s top legal officer, contracted with President Donald Trump’s Miami golf resort to host a crime prevention conference, despite the U.S. Constitution’s prohibition against his accepting money from a state. The conference, set for late May, was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic before any payments “were made or due,” said Lauren Cassedy, a spokesperson in Moody’s office. [HuffPost]

WHAT'S BREWING

SANDERS PROPOSES $2 TRILLION CORONAVIRUS RELIEF  Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) announced a host of ideas to address the human and economic fallout from the spread of coronavirus, including having the federal government send each U.S. household $2,000 for every month that the COVID-19 outbreak persists and empowering Medicare to cover all medical needs during the pandemic. Sanders estimated that the emergency policy package would cost $2 trillion. [HuffPost]

UN REFUGEE AGENCY TO SUSPEND RESETTLEMENTS The United Nations refugee agency UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration will temporarily suspend refugee resettlement departures because of the coronavirus pandemic. “ As countries drastically reduce entry into their territories, and restrictions around international air travel are introduced, refugee resettlement is being subject to disruptions,” said Melanie Gallant, spokesperson for the UNHCR in Canada. IRAN STATE TV WARNS MILLIONS COULD DIE Iran issued its most dire warning yet about the coronavirus outbreak ravaging the country, suggesting “millions” could die if the public keeps traveling and ignoring health guidance. A state television journalist who also is a medical doctor gave the warning only hours after hard-line Shiite faithful the previous night pushed their way into the courtyards of two major shrines that had just been closed over fears of the virus. BERNIE SANDERS' APPROACH TO LATIN AMERICAN LEADERS WOULDN'T BE THAT RADICAL Latin America policy has simmered just beneath the surface of this Democratic primary from its beginning. Few people in American politics have so forcefully denounced U.S. interventionism in Latin America for so long as Bernie Sanders. No one in the field, meanwhile, had as much direct experience with the region as Biden, who visited Latin America more than a dozen times as vice president. But Sanders' positions aren't necessarily as radical as his rhetoric might imply. [HuffPost]

DEMS GRAPPLE WITH STATES SUSPENDING PRIMARIES As states postpone their primary dates amid the coronavirus outbreak, the Democratic Party may be forced to grapple with its own delegate rules — or risk penalizing states for trying to adhere to public safety guidelines. Under current party rules, the Democratic primaries are supposed to be over by June 9. Any state that schedules their primary after that date could be stripped of half its delegates. [HuffPost]

PROGRESSIVE BEATS ABORTION RIGHTS FOE IN DEM RACE In a major win for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, Marie Newman defeated Democratic Rep. Dan Lipinski in Tuesday’s primary in Illinois, toppling one of the last remaining opponents of abortion rights among House Democrats. It was Newman’s second race against Lipinski in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District; she fell about 2,100 short of beating him in the 2018 primary. [HuffPost]
