For the past week or so, I’ve been hearing the same thing from friends and colleagues: their parents and other loved ones are not taking COVID-19 seriously enough. Despite being told to socially isolate, a friend’s 70+-year-old mom is out running errands. A cousin posted a photo on Facebook out at a bar on St. Patrick’s Day. Over the weekend, I saw Instagram stories of people dining out in restaurants and partying with friends. Florida’s beaches were packed.

Seeing friends and family members’ lax approach to social isolation is incredibly stressful — and that’s on top of an already panicky situation. We asked experts for some tips on how to talk to the people in your life who aren’t taking this pandemic seriously.

In case you missed it:

Something that has come up again and again is about pets and coronavirus: Can they get it? Can we get the virus from our pets? Some good news: your dog or cat isn’t likely to become infected with coronavirus or give it to you. But there are some safe practices you should adopt, because the virus could hypothetically live on their fur, just as it may live on any other surface in your home.

And what about taking them on walks?

As I mentioned above (though it goes without saying!), stress levels are high right now. Thankfully, many therapists are offering their services over phone and video chat. And some have kindly offered up their best advice for HuffPost; this is what the professionals are telling patients who are anxious about coronavirus.
