Government officials almost never publicize raids in advance, and Trump’s push for deportations gave undocumented people, lawyers and activists the time to mobilize in an unprecedented way. [AP]GOP SEN. BLOCKS 9/11 COMPENSATION FUND BILL Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul (R), has blocked a bipartisan bill that would ensure a victims’ compensation fund for the Sept. 11 attacks never runs out of money. He says any new spending such as the 9/11 bill should be offset by cuts. [AP]KYOTO ANIMATION STUDIO ARSON KILLS AT LEAST 7 A man burst into an animation production studio in Kyoto, Japan, and set it on fire early Thursday, killing at least 7 people and leaving more possibly trapped inside. [AP]HOUSE VOTES TO TABLE IMPEACHMENT RESOLUTION The House of Representatives voted to table a resolution to impeach Trump by a vote of 334-95 on Wednesday ― the latest show of simmering discontent among some Democrats about the refusal of their party’s leadership to challenge the president. [HuffPost]EU SMACKS AMAZON WITH ANTITRUST PROBE The European Union said it is investigating whether Amazon uses data from independent retailers to gain an unfair advantage, a decision that could lead to changes in how the internet’s biggest marketplace works. [AP]DANGEROUS HEAT WAVE TO SCORCH MIDWEST AND EAST COAST The heat wave that has been roasting much of the U.S. in recent days is just getting warmed up, with temperatures expected to soar to dangerous levels through the weekend. [HuffPost]WOMAN JAILED FOR RECORDING BOSS’S SEXUAL HARASSMENT Baiq Nuril recorded one of her boss’s explicit phone calls as evidence of the sexual harassment she said she endured on more than 50 occasions. The recording was forwarded by a colleague to the local department of education in Indonesia. Shortly after, Nuril was fired from her job, jailed, and her boss sued her for defamation. [CNN]
