No Images? Click here Welcome to your weekly dose of black newsHey fam! This week has been tiring, thanks to a new cycle reluctant to call the president what he is: racist. It started out with Trump tweeting and deleting a hateful statement, telling Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley f(our congresswomen of color) to leave the country if they didn't like it here. After trying to walk it back, his supporters at a North Carolina rally doubled down for him by chanting "send her back" after Rep. Ilhan Omar condemned Trump's tweet. The congresswoman showed nothing short of courage and class, however, as she responded to the hate by quoting Maya Angelou's "Still I Rise" poem. On Thursday, she was rightfully welcomed home like the hero she is. I'm really relieved to see people taking this attack from the president and his fans seriously, but folks need to do a better job of calling a spade a spade. If it looks like a racist, sounds like a racist and acts like a racist, I can guarantee you it's not chopped liver. (Also, Trump is a master of distraction and you can read Julia Craven's breakdown on that here.) Also this week, the Chicago Police Board voted to fire four officers who are accused of covering up the 2014 killing of Laquan McDonald, a black teenager who was shot 16 times by Jason Van Dyke, a white cop. New York City police have yet to be held accountable for the death of Eric Garner, whose last words were I can't breathe as a white cop held him in a choke hold. The Department of Justice said that they will not be charging the cop responsible, but Garner's mother, Gwen Carr, is calling for the officer's firing. As I said earlier, this was a difficult week for a lot of us. But we made it through, fam! Stay cool, enjoy your weekend and go see Lion King. Also, enjoy this gif from Beyoncé's "Spirit" video and go listen to Blue Ivy's vocals on "Brown Skin Girl."
