No Images? Click here Welcome to your weekly dose of black newsHey fam!I'm coming to your inbox a little early this week not only because I love y'all but also because it's a long holiday weekend and we all have lives to live.Over the weekend, social media trolls reared their ugly heads to attack Kamala Harris' blackness. Donald Trump retweeted a post claiming that the senator doesn't represent Black Americans because her dad was born in Jamaica. He later deleted the retweet. Meanwhile, the president’s former campaign spokeswoman Katrina Pierson tried to discredit Harris another way, indicating she is not African enough to run as a black presidential candidate.Do y'all hear how this sounds? Idiotic. These claims wreak of a similar racist stench that Obama had to deal with. This is disgusting and far from a valid critique we should be exploring. Also this week, lawyers for Marshae Jones filed a motion for her manslaughter charges to be dropped after her fetus died when she was shot in the stomach. Police say that the 28-year-old Alabama woman is being charged because she allegedly provoked a fight with the person who shot her. The charges are not only tragic and seeped in sexism, but they also could set a terrible precedent."This is a new boundary that has been crossed," said Kimberly Mutcherson, co-dean of Rutgers Law School. "Women who lose a pregnancy, who are already dealing with that pain, will also have to think about whether there’s anything they did that the state could decide was criminal."Lastly, in light of the July 4th holiday, I leave you with some wise words from Frederick Douglass:"The sunlight that brought life and healing to you, has brought stripes and death to me. This Fourth [of] July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn."This week's Best Things 🎉 Cori ‘Coco’ Gauff, Youngest Qualifying Wimbledon Player, Defeats Venus WilliamsAt only 15, Cori “Coco” Gauff took on the five-time Wimbledon champion in a historic match.Rihanna’s Reunion With Her Gym Teacher Will Give You All The RiRi FeelsRihanna greeted the school gym teacher she called her “mentor” with a warm hug this week at the Cricket World Cup.Notes from the mailbag 📫We want to hear from you! Each week we'll have a new question or topic.
