Click here I can't stop thinking about thisIt's a minor detail in an explosive story, but I can't stop thinking about how the president reportedly called one of his female Cabinet members "sweetheart" and "honey."The Cabinet member, Kirstjen Nielsen, is now gone from the White House and her time there was mired in controversy. I'm not here to defend her—she was instrumental in moving Trump's family separation policy forward, after all—but just to point out the outrageous level of disrespect Trump obviously continues to have for women. In a damning story published in The New York Times last night, Michael D. Shear and Julie Hirschfeld Davis report on meetings the president had with his advisers about immigration. Trump was reportedly fuming that they weren't acting faster to "close the border." He suggested soldiers shoot migrants in the leg to stop them from coming to the states, according to the report. (Trump is calling the allegations fake news.)According to the Times report, Trump was particularly miffed with Secretary Nielsen, whom he later fired on Twitter. In a scene recounted by the Times reporters, he was impatient with her for not doing more to "take down drones."This is how he talked to her [emphasis mine]: “Kirstjen, you didn’t hear me the first time, honey,” Mr. Trump said, according to two people familiar with the conversation. “Shoot ’em down. Sweetheart, just shoot ’em out of the sky, O.K.?”I mean, we all know men who talk like this. You just hope they would stick to their perches on diner footstools, shaggy couches and at painfully awkward family reunions. And not out running the countryWith the threat of impeachment bearing down on the White House, and a stream of endlessly terrible and gross news coming at us daily, it's easy to forget for a minute something core about this president: his deep level of disregard for women. He's already been accused of sexual assault by many women. We've heard the pussy tape. We know the administration is actively fighting against gender equality on a number of fronts—rolling back reproductive rights, blocking efforts to assess the gender wage gap, fighting on the side of sex discrimination.Yet, reading this was still somehow galling. I have no kicker on this one, readers. It's just your daily reminder that we have a misogynist in the Oval. Before you go ... follow me on Twitter @EmilyRPeck Here's what else you need to know👋You may have noticed our website is now www.huffpost.com.
