While we often read about fake news and see fake forwards on social media on a daily basis, we hardly think of the impact it has on people's lives. Piyasree Dasgupta writes about how Rehana Sultana, known for her work amongst poor and disenfranchised Muslims living in Assam’s ‘chars’, had to be on the run from the police for two months because of fake news around a Facebook post. Meanwhile, the protests by Delhi police personnel intensified with top cop Amulya Patnaik urging them to return to work. Also, Dilip Ghosh added himself to the list of BJP leaders who believe cows have super powers. He told a public gathering on Monday that cow milk contains gold.

Assam: Fake News Sent This Woman Scholar On The Run From Police

A case was registered against Sultana under Section 153 of the Indian Penal Code for attacks on a race or religion and Section 67 of the IT Act for obscenity. Lawyers familiar with Rehana Sultana’s case told HuffPost India that the court instructed the police to not take her into custody. However, her acquaintances said the threat of imminent arrest hung over her for over two months until she finally got bail on October 23, 2019.
