JUDGE ORDERS TRUMP LAWYER TO TESTIFY U.S. District Judge Ketanji Brown ruled that former White House Counsel Don McGahn must honor a congressional subpoena and testify in the impeachment hearings -- regardless of what President Donald Trump ordered him to do. “Presidents are not kings,” Brown wrote in his ruling, adding that “no one is above the law.” McGahn, who’s been characterized by House Democrats as a key witness to allegations that Trump obstructed special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe, vowed to appeal. PENTAGON CHIEF SAYS TRUMP INTERVENED TO HELP CONVICTED NAVY SEAL Defense Secretary Mark Esper revealed that Trump gave him direct orders to halt disciplinary proceedings against a Navy SEAL convicted of a war crime. Chief Petty Officer Eddie Gallagher was demoted following his conviction and had been told to remove his Trident pin, a symbol of his status as a SEAL, but Trump reinstated his rank earlier this month and ordered the Navy not to remove Gallagher’s pin. NEW FEDERAL LAW BANS EXTREME ANIMAL CRUELTY Cases of extreme animal cruelty can now be prosecuted as federal crimes under a new bill signed into law by Trump. The Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture Act would prohibit the intentional crushing, burning, drowning, suffocation or other violence causing “serious bodily injury” to animals. Animal cruelty in the U.S. is typically a matter of state or local jurisdiction, but the new law gives federal authorities the power to prosecute acts of cruelty in specific cases such as those that span multiple jurisdictions. WARREN ACCUSES RIVAL BLOOMBERG OF TRYING TO ‘BUY NOMINATION’ Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has accused fellow presidential hopeful Michael Bloomberg of trying to “buy a nomination in the Democratic Party.” Speaking at an Iowa community meeting, Warren took issue with Bloomberg’s exorbitant ad spending. The billionaire, who formally announced his campaign for president over the weekend and is one of the world’s richest people, is sending a message that he “doesn’t need people … [only] bags and bags of money,” Warren said. SUPREME COURT TEMPORARILY BLOCKS SUBPOENA FOR TRUMP TAX RETURNS The Supreme Court issued a temporary stay of an appeals court ruling that required Trump’s accounting firm to provide his tax returns to the House Oversight and Reform Committee. PENTAGON, WHITE HOUSE MUST RELEASE UKRAINE DOCUMENTS, JUDGE SAYS A federal judge ordered the Pentagon and the White House Office of Management and Budget to comply with a Freedom of Information Act request to release documents related to Trump’s decision to delay military aid to Ukraine. The documents were “sought in order to inform the public on a matter of extreme national concern,” U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said in her decision. [HuffPost]
OUSTED NAVY CHIEF LAMENTS TRUMP MEDDLING Richard Spencer, the Navy secretary who was ousted over his handling of Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher’s controversial case, said Trump’s interference in the case sends a message “that you can get away with things.” Spencer, who resigned on Sunday, said there must be “good order and discipline” in the Navy. “It’s the backbone of what we do,” he said. FEDS PROBING GIULIANI’S CONSULTING BUSINESS: REPORTS Federal prosecutors have reportedly issued subpoenas to people connected to Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani and his business associates -- a sign that a sweeping investigation could be underway into potential obstruction of justice, fraud and money laundering. KUSHNER TAPPED TO MANAGE BORDER WALL? Trump has made his son-in-law Jared Kushner the point person on issues related to his long-touted U.S.-Mexico border wall, The Washington Post reported. It’s unclear how Kushner will juggle this new responsibility with his already full-to-the-brim plate, which includes the not-so-simple tasks of forging peace in the Middle East, and transforming the U.S. immigration and criminal justice systems.
