And why we should stop counting calories. Seriously. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

I struggle with setting New Year's resolutions (they don't always work, anyway). However, I do try to set a new intention around my birthday, which is close enough to the beginning of the year to feel like a resolution in its own way. Tomorrow is the big day, and my intention is to build a better relationship with food. I don't always have the best approach, especially when it comes to food labeling and self-shaming.

That's why this story about calorie counting — specifically how pointless and sometimes harmful it can be — couldn't have come at a better time for me. Reporter Kelsey Borresen chatted with experts about how calories are not created equal, and how the concept of "calories in, calories out" can set us up for failure in some ways. I hope it helps you, too.

❤️,

Lindsay
