CDC URGES AMERICANS TO PREPARE FOR VIRUS SPREAD Federal health officials said Americans should prepare for a nationwide spread of the new coronavirus that has so far killed over 2,700 people worldwide. Nancy Messonnier, a director with the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters that the U.S. is “buying more time to prepare” for likely outbreaks with its current containment measures. U.S. SOLDIER BASED IN SOUTH KOREA TESTS POSITIVE South Korea reported 169 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, including a U.S. soldier, as health authorities readied an ambitious plan to test more than 200,000 members of a church hit hardest by the country’s outbreak. The U.S. military reported a 23-year-old soldier based in Camp Carroll was infected. [Reuters]


DISNEY CEO STEPS DOWN The Walt Disney Co. has named Bob Chapek its CEO, replacing Bob Iger, effective immediately. The surprise announcement makes Iger executive chairman. Chapek was most recently chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. Iger said it was an “optimal time” for him to step down following Disney’s acquisition of Fox’s entertainment assets and the launch of Disney Plus streaming service in November. [AP]


OFFICER ZIP-TIES 6-YEAR-OLD AT FLORIDA SCHOOL Newly released body camera footage from the arrest of a 6-year-old girl at an Orlando school shows an officer placing zip ties on the girl’s wrists as she begs to be let go. The 2019 footage shows officer Dennis Turner tying the girl's wrists and closing his squad car door on her as she cries to be set free. [HuffPost]


FUGITIVE BABOONS CAPTURED IN SYDNEY Three baboons briefly escaped from a truck en route to a hospital in Sydney and roamed the streets, prompting a police response, huge reaction on social media and a subsequent investigation. Callers to 2GB radio station first brought the rogue baboons to light. A listener told incredulous host Ben Fordham that he looked out his sixth-floor window at the hospital and saw three baboons. “Mate I’m deadset serious,” the caller said. [HuffPost]

Attorneys general from Florida, Nevada, Oregon and Texas are spearheading the investigation, which also covers Juul's claims regarding nicotine content, and statements regarding risks, safety and effectiveness as a smoking cessation device. Pete Buttigieg is attending a fundraiser on Wednesday with a twist one only encounters in Palm Beach: The two hosts were longtime members of President Donald Trump’s private club, Mar-a-Lago.The public-facing invitation for the $500-to-$2,800 per head fundraiser does not mention a specific location, merely “The Island of Palm Beach.” [HuffPost]


SUPREME COURT RULES AGAINST FAMILY OF TEEN KILLED BY BORDER PATROL The U.S. Supreme Court decided that the family of a Mexican teen who was fatally shot on Mexican soil by a Border Patrol agent does not have the right to sue for damages under the U.S. Constitution. The 5-4 ruling was a blow for the family of Sergio Adrián Hernández Güereca, who had been playing along Mexico’s border with the U.S. when agent Jesus Mesa shot him in the face in 2010. [HuffPost]


EX-LABOR SECRETARY: BARR IS TURNING U.S. INTO DICTATORSHIP Robert Reich calls for William Barr to quit “for the sake of our democracy” in a new video. Reich, who was labor secretary under President Bill Clinton, accuses Barr of corrupting and politicizing the Department of Justice by “working hand in hand with Donald Trump to bend federal law enforcement to the president’s will.” [HuffPost]


WEINSTEIN RECORDED A ROBOCALL FOR BLOOMBERG IN 2005 The downfall of convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein has been uncomfortable for many politicians who once socialized with him and took his donations. Weinstein’s reach even extends into the current Democratic presidential race. In 2005, he recorded a robocall to boost Michael Bloomberg’s bid for reelection as mayor of New York. [HuffPost]


DEATH TOLL RISES IN NEW DELHI At least 21 people, including one police officer, have been killed in violent communal clashes in New Delhi. The unrest erupted on Monday between supporters and opponents of a new law that fast-tracks citizenship for non-Muslim minorities from select countries. The violence, which has also left at least 188 people injured, coincided with a visit to India by U.S. President Donald Trump. [CNN]
