Click here Last week, Catherine Pearson interviewed the authors behind the book “The Formula,” which chronicles so-called strategic parenting and raising highly successful kids (think CEOs, elected officials, etc). Everyone wants their children to be successful, and of course parents will try practically anything to give their kids a leg up.And while I’m all on board with strategic parenting — I have memorized responses to certain questions, I have dutifully read to my kids every night since they were born — I stopped to think about what success really means to me. Sure, I want my kids to be able to support themselves and their future families. And sure, I’d like them to have fruitful jobs that hold their interest. But this conversation between Catherine and the authors had me spending time thinking about what success for my kids means.I think I’ve boiled it down to this: Success to me means being kind, resilient, empathetic, honest and welcoming. If nothing else, I want my kids to leave our home on their way to college (again, success!) being good people. So while I’d love for them to have material success, my kids are and will be successful in my eyes if they are just plain good people. Strategic parenting to me, then, means reinforcing kindness and honesty and learning to cope with everything life throws at you. That’s a tall order in and of itself, but I’m committed to it. While I already had a plan, as it were, for who I want my kids to be, I encourage you to spend time (even 10 minutes!) thinking about your children and success. It was a fun exercise for me and I hope you’ll enjoy the time well-spent, too.An artist mom put a fun twist on the usual parenting comics by creating hilarious charts and diagrams about what it’s really like to be a mom.
