He was the first Black filmmaker and the youngest person in history to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Director. He was an icon and he told stories for us. “He opened doors for filmmakers of color to tell powerful stories that have been too often ignored,” President Barack Obama wrote of his legacy. Ava DuVernay called Singleton “a giant among us.” Jordan Peele said he was “a true inspiration.” Spike Lee said he will "forever miss my brother."Rest in power, John Singleton.Over the weekend, Jay-Z paid homage to another fallen great, Nipsey Hussle, with a freestyle at his B-Sides 2 show in New York City. “Gentrify your own hood, before these people do it/ Claim eminent domain and have your people move in/ That’s a small glimpse into what Nipsey was doing/ For anybody still confused as to what he was doing,” he rapped during a touching tribute.On Wednesday, Caster Semenya lost her appeal against rules designed to decrease naturally high testosterone levels in some female runners. The two-time Olympic champion will now be forced to medicate to suppress her testosterone levels if she wants to defend her world title in September in Doha, Qatar. For instance, Idris Elba married Sabrina Dhowre in an absolutely beautiful Moroccan wedding ceremony; Black Twitter dragged the entire hell out of Taylor Swift for blatantly stealing the concept for Beychella and executing terribly, creating #Mayochella; and for the first time EVER, Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Miss America are all black women. Go off, queens!
