| President Donald Trump’s administration is doing some wild and unprecedented stonewalling of congressional investigations, but don’t sleep on Trump’s methodical attempts to unravel the social safety net that are going on in the background.This month, the administration signaled it would like to change how the government adjusts its official poverty threshold for inflation every year, which could result in millions fewer Americans qualifying for a wide range of benefits over time.It’s only the most recent of many unilateral moves Trump has made on social policy, which all seek to fulfill an Inauguration Day promise to “get our people off of welfare and back to work.”It’s difficult to compare the unilateral actions of different presidencies, but it seems that the Trump administration’s social policy power grabs have been drastic by recent standards, said Ron Haskins, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. The U.S. Supreme Court’s internal divisions over the death penalty were on full display again on Monday in fresh wrangling over how the justices handled recent attempts by two convicted murderers in Alabama and Texas to put off their executions. Eighteen 2020 candidates have qualified so far for 20 available spots in the Democratic debates, scheduled to kick off on June 26. Four candidates have yet to qualify, and several other hopefuls may still enter the race, potentially setting up a frantic scramble to see who will ultimately be allowed on the debate stage. The Department of Homeland Security has asked the Pentagon for more help to secure the U.S.-Mexico border, while acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan says he is prepared to keep American troops in the region longer-term to enact President Donald Trump’s hard-line immigration plans. Former Vice President Joe Biden (D) defended his record as an advocate for stronger environmental protections on Monday, responding to a report that he plans to take a “middle ground” on solutions to climate change.A Supreme Court ruling was supposed to help. But a new report shows that employers are getting away with discrimination against pregnant women.
