Click here Welcome to your weekly dose of Black newsHey fam! Before the three-day weekend kicks off, you know I had to show your inbox some love!First off, shoutout to billionaire philanthropist Robert F. Smith for vowing to pay off the entire Morehouse College class of 2019's student loan debt on their graduation day. “On behalf of the eight generations of my family who have been in this country, we’re going to put a little fuel in your bus,” he told the HBCU graduates during his commencement speech. “My family is making a grant to eliminate” the student loans. Also, Tamron Hall got real about why she decided to keep her pregnancy a secret. The TV host said, “I was terrified I would lose this baby and I would have to go back and tell everyone that now it was bad news, and after this pregnancy had gone so far,” highlighting the realities of the Black maternal mortality rate.In Sacramento, the police department is under fire after a video surfaced showing officers handcuffing a 12-year-old black boy, pinning him down and placing a sack over his head, and keeping it on him after he says multiple times, “I can’t breathe.” Meanwhile in Dallas, Muhlaysia Booker, a 23-year-old black trans woman, was found shot dead a month after she had been brutally beaten by a mob. She is the fourth black trans woman to be killed this year. In both of these instances, we see a blatant disregard for Black livelihood. All Black lives matter and we must make sure we are protecting every single last one. Finally, because we must end on a light note going into the weekend, Rihanna is making history as the first Black woman to create an original brand for LVMH and she gave Times Magazine a first look at her collection and insight on why being unapologetic is important for her.“You’re going to be black wherever you go. And I don’t know if it’s unfortunate or fortunate, because I love being black. So, sorry for those who don’t like it — that’s the first thing you see before you even hear my voice.”I know that's right, RiRi!Have a good weekend, y'all! This week's Best Things 🎉 Trayvon Martin’s Mom, Sybrina Fulton, Is Running For Miami-Dade County CommissionFulton became a passionate gun control and anti-poverty activist after the shooting death of her unarmed teenage son.How Black Farmers Are Trying To End Centuries Of Racism In America’s Food SystemPrejudice, violence, and poverty have pushed black farmers off their land.
