Raise your hand if you’ve ever thought your life would be better if some circumstance were different. I’m totally guilty of this. I often catch myself thinking things like, “if I lose weight, I know I’d be happier.” Pinning my happiness on an achievement in the future is a toxic thought, one of 14 that therapists say are sabotaging our happiness. As reporter Nicole Pajer discovered when writing this story, so many of us have these automatic negative thoughts (“I should have” and “I’m such an idiot” are two other common ones). It’s important to be aware when these beliefs pop up in our brains. Because it’s definitely possible to be happier right now — we just gotta get out of our own way. Sorry everyone, but shots aren’t just for kids. Turns out there are a few vaccines you should get in adulthood, too. This week, reporter Beth Krietsch looked into all the immunizations you need. Here’s what you should know:You can still get the HPV vaccine. The FDA recently expanded the age you can get the HPV shot from 26 to 45. And the organization also changed their recommendation to include men. (As a reminder, the HPV shot can protect against high-risk strains that possibly lead to cancer.)Some shots you’ve had in the past might need updating. For example, your Tdap vaccine, which protects you against issues like tetanus, needs a booster shot every 10 years.
Get. Your. Flu. Shot. It’s not too late, people! Even if you didn’t get the shot in the fall, you can still protect yourself by getting one now. You should get the flu vaccine every year. Period. Got a spare minute? Use it to change your life. Our "A Minute And Change" series will help you become happier, healthier and more productive by doing one thing a little differently. This week’s tip comes from actress Cobie Smulders, who recently partnered with the campaign Not on My Watch to bring awareness to ovarian cancer, which she was diagnosed with at age 25. Below, Smulders offers her best (and slightly counterintuitive) tip for motivating herself when she’s feeling unproductive: "I think that it’s totally OK to have a lazy day and to allow yourself to really rest. When you are ready to get productive, put on some great music and start tackling tasks one at a time." HuffPost is now a part of Oath and a part of Verizon.
