Click here Tuesday, April 22 GOP ATTORNEYS GENERAL: UPHOLD OBAMACARE The Republican state attorneys general of Ohio and Montana urged a federal appeals court to uphold the Obamacare federal health care law. They said invalidating the Affordable Care Act would be disruptive for patients, doctors, insurers and employers. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is expected to review a December ruling by U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor in Fort Worth, Texas, striking down the law. [Reuters] [Tweet | Share on Facebook]DAVID BLAINE ACCUSED OF SEXUAL ASSAULT Two women have accused celebrity magician David Blaine of sexual assault. The New York police chief of detectives said Blaine was “under active investigation” by the department’s Special Victims Unit. The performance artist has said only that he’s not been contacted by police. CNN reported at least one of the allegations may fall outside the statute of limitations. One of Blaine’s accusers told authorities she was sexually assaulted by the magician inside his Manhattan apartment in 1998, The Daily Beast reported. [HuffPost]SECOND WOMAN SPEAKS Another woman has publicly accused Joe Biden of inappropriately touching her when he was vice president, intensifying the spotlight on of his interactions with women over the years. Amy Lappos told The Hartford Courant that Biden grabbed her by the head and rubbed noses with her during a 2009 political fundraiser. The allegation comes after former Nevada assembly member Lucy Flores published an op-ed in New York Magazine’s “The Cut” on Friday, alleging that Biden touched and kissed her without her consent in 2014. [HuffPost]WHISTLEBLOWER TELLS ALL ON TRUMP SECURITY CLEARANCE A Trump official has come forward with major concerns about security at the White House, according to a House Oversight and Reform Committee report. Tricia Newbold, the adjudications manager in the Personnel Security Office, reported what the committee called “grave breaches of national security” over the past two years, including 25 individuals who were given security clearance despite recommendations that their applications be denied. [HuffPost]POLICE RELEASE BODY CAM VIDEO OF SHOOTING MAN IN CAR Police have released body camera footage of the February shooting death of Willie McCoy, a 20-year-old black man, who was found by officers sleeping in his car in a Taco Bell drive-thru in California. Police shot and killed McCoy, an aspiring rapper, claiming he was reaching for a firearm in his lap. The footage that police released Friday does not clearly show his lap, his hands or a firearm. [HuffPost]4 DEAD IN IN MULTIPLE HOMICIDE IN NORTH DAKOTA Four people were found dead Monday in what police called a multiple homicide at a North Dakota property-management business. The bodies of three men and a woman were discovered inside RJR Maintenance and Management in Mandan, a city of about 22,000 just across the Missouri River west of Bismarck, police Chief Jason Ziegler said. The victims weren’t immediately identified and police didn’t say how they died. [AP]LAPD NAMES SUSPECT IN NIPSEY HUSSLE SHOOTING The Los Angeles Police Department has identified a suspect in the fatal shooting of rapper Nipsey Hussle, 33, who was shot dead on Sunday afternoon. Two other men were also injured. The LAPD identified the suspect as Eric Holder, a 29-year-old Angeleno, and appealed for help finding him. That followed a candlelit vigil for Hussle that turned chaotic on Monday night, leaving at least 19 people injured — two critically — after a crowd stampeded during the event. [HuffPost]HOUSE JUDICIARY TO SUBPOENA MUELLER REPORT House Democrats announced they will authorize a subpoena demanding Robert Mueller’s full report on the Trump-Russia investigation on Wednesday. The issuance of subpoenas would follow Attorney General William Barr’s statement last week that he won’t meet the Judiciary Committee’s Tuesday deadline for handing over the report, which is more than 300 pages. He has said it will take “weeks, not months,” to redact sensitive parts of the report and release it to the public. [HuffPost]U.S. HACKERS HELPED UAE SPY ON AL JAZEERA CHAIRMAN A group of American hackers who once worked for U.S. intelligence agencies helped the United Arab Emirates spy on a BBC host, the chairman of Al Jazeera and other prominent Arab media figures during a tense 2017 confrontation pitting the UAE and its allies against the Gulf state of Qatar. The American operatives worked for Project Raven, a secret Emirati intelligence program that spied on dissidents, militants and political opponents of the UAE monarchy. [Reuters]PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERNS OVER NEW MEASLES CASES Public health officials in California are worried about a rise in reported measles cases in the state amid a growing anti-vaccination movement. There have been 16 confirmed cases of measles reported in California so far this year, according to recent data from the state Department of Public Health. Officials said they are very concerned with that tally, especially when compared with the 21 cases of the disease reported in California in all of 2018. [HuffPost]WHAT’S NEXT FOR BREXIT Against the backdrop of a Conservative Party leadership race and talk of a looming general election, MPs will on Monday hold a second round of so-called indicative votes on alternatives to Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal. The option expected to get a House of Commons majority is for a customs union — a much softer Brexit than the one offered by the prime minister. The vote isn’t binding, but the PM will come under intense political pressure to adopt whatever parliament decides. [HuffPost]BUTTIGIEG CLEANS UP Pete Buttigieg, a Midwestern mayor who in late January launched a seemingly long-shot bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential bid, announced Monday that his campaign raised more than $7 million in this year’s first three months. The full significance of Buttigieg’s haul will rest on still-unknown details, including how much of the money he has on hand and the number of donors who contributed, but the figure nevertheless represents a coup likely to heighten the seriousness with which his campaign is viewed.
