No Images? Click here Earlier this week, I went to Udaipur and found myself covering the Modi rally. While I usually cover entertainment (well, no shortage of that in politics now, is there), to look at a campaign rally from the lens of a film critic was quite a refreshing departure. Read the piece here.Meanwhile, before the critics could have a go at the Narendra Modi biopic, the Election Commission had the chance to review it, as directed by the Supreme Court. In its assessment of the film, the EC said what everyone pretty much suspected - the film “eulogises a public representative” and "can be categorised as hagiography" and that its release could "tilt the balance in favour of a particular party."While I'm yet to get a chance to interview Modi, Akshay Kumar, self-elected brand ambassador of nationalism, flew down to Delhi for a tête-à-tête with Modi. If by morning, the character is still with me, I am on.” Unfortunately, the character didn’t wake up with her. The end.If this story was about a man, it probably wouldn’t even be worth repeating. But in an industry, where male stars still rule the roost, this actually is a big deal, just one of the small ways in which Parvathy and a few others like her have been changing conversations in Malayalam cinema. In case you missed it…New to this email?
