No Images? Click here Welcome to your weekly dose of black newsIt's honestly been hard for me to think about anything other than Nipsey Hussle this week. On Sunday, he was shot and killed outside of his South LA store. We lost more than a rapper. He was an activist, an entrepreneur, an innovator, a philanthropist, an advocate for his community and so much more. This loss hurts because it feels like his works and contributions to this world were cut short due to the same senseless violence he was fighting to stop. Nipsey was a public figure who not only loved black people but fought for black people. Today, that's rarer that we may realize. I think about the young black lives he was teaching to know their worth and invest in themselves and their communities. I think about his peers who followed in his entrepreneurial footsteps. But most of all, I think about Lauren London and his two beautiful children who's lives have been forever altered -- and the black women like Lauren who can relate all too well. It's not fair. It's not fair that we have to say goodbye so soon. It's not fair that systemic oppression and racist policy results in the perfect storm for violence in our communities. And though LAPD has arrested the suspect, it's still not fair that we have to bury yet another black man. I've been able to find solace, however, in the few rays of light that came out of this ugliness. The tributes, the outpouring of love, the reminders that Nipsey was bout that life and lowkey had feminist values. Even the recognition that he, too, was flawed and that it's OK to acknowledge that AND mourn his life. "Victory Lap" has been on repeat for me and a whole bunch of other folks this week. Nipsey's work was not in vain. While we mourn and reminisce and heal, let's make sure his legacy to uplift our communities carries on. The marathon continues. Rest in power, Nipsey. ![]() Things that made me smile this week 🎉 And hopefully they'll make you smile, too.
