CDC URGES AMERICANS TO PREPARE FOR VIRUS SPREAD Federal health officials said Americans should prepare for a nationwide spread of the new coronavirus that has so far killed over 2,700 people worldwide. Nancy Messonnier, a director with the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters that the U.S. is “buying more time to prepare” for likely outbreaks with its current containment measures. U.S. SOLDIER BASED IN SOUTH KOREA TESTS POSITIVE South Korea reported 169 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, including a U.S. soldier, as health authorities readied an ambitious plan to test more than 200,000 members of a church hit hardest by the country’s outbreak. DISNEY CEO STEPS DOWN The Walt Disney Co. has named Bob Chapek its CEO, replacing Bob Iger, effective immediately. The surprise announcement makes Iger executive chairman. Chapek was most recently chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. Iger said it was an “optimal time” for him to step down following Disney’s acquisition of Fox’s entertainment assets and the launch of Disney Plus streaming service in November. [AP]
OFFICER ZIP-TIES 6-YEAR-OLD AT FLORIDA SCHOOL Newly released body camera footage from the arrest of a 6-year-old girl at an Orlando school shows an officer placing zip ties on the girl’s wrists as she begs to be let go. The 2019 footage shows officer Dennis Turner tying the girl's wrists and closing his squad car door on her as she cries to be set free. [HuffPost]
FUGITIVE BABOONS CAPTURED IN SYDNEY Three baboons briefly escaped from a truck en route to a hospital in Sydney and roamed the streets, prompting a police response, huge reaction on social media and a subsequent investigation. Callers to 2GB radio station first brought the rogue baboons to light. A listener told incredulous host Ben Fordham that he looked out his sixth-floor window at the hospital and saw three baboons. “Mate I’m deadset serious,” the caller said. [HuffPost] |
