TRUMP SUGGESTS MORE LAWSUITS AGAINST MEDIA Trump doubled down on his campaign’s libel lawsuit against The New York Times for an opinion piece, claiming that the writer was “totally wrong” and that there will be more lawsuits coming. Asked at a news briefing whether he believed that people who have an opinion contrary to his should be sued, Trump said: “When they get the opinion totally wrong, as The New York Times did." BOSTON MOM, DAUGHTER, 'ATTACKED FOR SPEAKING SPANISH' A woman says she and her 15-year-old daughter were physically assaulted for speaking Spanish on a street in Boston earlier this month by two white women who reportedly told them, “This is America” and ordered them to leave the country. The mother said the two women savagely punched and bit her and her daughter on Feb. 15 in Maverick Square, East Boston. [HuffPost]
LYNCHING IS FINALLY A FEDERAL CRIME Sixty-five years after 14-year-old Emmett Till was lynched in Mississippi, the House has approved legislation designating lynching as a hate crime under federal law. The bill, introduced by Illinois Rep. Bobby Rush and named after Till, comes 120 years after Congress first considered anti-lynching legislation and after dozens of similar efforts were defeated. POPE CALLS ON CATHOLICS TO GIVE UP TROLLING FOR LENT During Lent, Catholics are called on to give up something, like sweets. Pope Francis added a modern twist to the list of things to quit during the season and beyond: insulting people on social media. The pope said in partially improvised remarks, that Lent “is a time to give up useless words, gossip, rumors, tittle-tattle and speak to God on a first name basis." [Reuters]
CONCENTRATION CAMP SURVIVORS RALLY FOR DETAINED IMMIGRANTS My 95-year-old grandfather, Homer Yasui, has never been one to dwell on trauma. He’s described his incarceration matter-of-factly many times: how the FBI took his father away after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and how the government ultimately sent his family to a concentration camp. BLOOMBERG REALLY WANTED POOR PEOPLE TO DRINK LESS SODA As mayor of New York, Mike Bloomberg wanted his constituents to be healthier. He cracked down on smoking in public, trans fats in restaurants, and he really, really wanted New Yorkers to drink less soda. At a Democratic debate Tuesday, Bloomberg said that as president, he wouldn't insist on nationalizing the specific anti-obesity policies he pursued as mayor.
